What a compliant pool gate does
The gate is the part of the barrier that gets used every day, so it's the part that wears out first. To pass, a pool gate must:
- Swing outwards, away from the pool
- Close by itself from any open position, fully open, halfway or just ajar
- Latch by itself every time it closes
- Have the latch release out of a child's reach, which the Register checklist for newer pools puts at 1500 mm
- Never be propped or tied open
Common gate faults
The gate won't swing shut
The self-closing hinge has lost tension or worn out, or the gate is dragging on the ground. Hinges can often be re-tensioned; worn ones are replaced. A dragging gate may need re-hanging or the paving below it lowering.
It closes but won't latch
The gate has dropped or the post has moved, so the latch no longer lines up, or the latch is worn. The fix is usually adjusting the hinges, realigning the latch or replacing it.
The latch is too low
On some older gates the latch sits within a child's reach. It may need moving higher or replacing with a different type of latch. The certifier will say what's acceptable for your pool.
The gate opens the wrong way
A gate that swings into the pool area needs re-hanging to open outwards, which can mean new hinges and a new latch position.

What gate repairs cost
No Sydney fencing contractor publishes a fixed price for a hinge or latch, so these are task prices from Airtasker's NSW listings. A new gate is a bigger job: the new pool fencing prices include single gates.

What to send with your request
- What the gate does now: won't close, won't latch, drags, or opens inwards
- The gate type: frameless glass, semi-frameless, aluminium or timber
- The brand of hinge or latch, if you know it
- Your re-inspection, settlement or lease date
Once it's fixed, book the re-inspection with the certifier or council that inspected the pool. A fencing contractor can't issue the certificate.
Common questions
Why won't my pool gate latch?
Usually because the self-closing hinge has lost tension, the gate has dropped so the latch no longer lines up, or the latch itself is worn. A contractor can re-tension or replace the hinge, re-hang the gate or realign or replace the latch.
Which way should a pool gate open?
Outwards, away from the pool. A gate that swings into the pool area fails the inspection.
How high does a pool gate latch need to be?
The NSW Swimming Pool Register checklist for pools built after 1 May 2013 says the latch release must be 1500 mm above the ground. The Australian Standard allows some other arrangements, such as a shielded latch, so the certifier decides whether yours passes.
How much does a pool gate repair cost?
No Sydney contractor publishes a fixed hinge or latch price. Airtasker's NSW pool gate repair tasks range from $125 to $250, with a median of $175. A full new glass gate costs much more.
Can I prop the pool gate open while I'm in the yard?
No. Pool gates must never be propped open. Penrith Council has said it issues on-the-spot fines for propped-open pool gates.
